RSR’S preliminary inspection flags possible vehicle driver negligence

The Railway Safety Regulator’s (RSR) inspectors have conducted a preliminary inspection following this morning’s fatal level crossing accident in Blackheath, in the Western Cape. The accident claimed nine (9) children’s lives this morning. The RSR’s inspectors are on site and have observed that the level crossing protection was found to be adequate. read more>>


RSR investigates fatal Blackheath level crossing collision

The Railway Safety Regulator’s (RSR) inspectors are on site, investigating a level crossing accident which left eight (8) school children dead in Blackheath in the Western Cape. The collision occurred at 7:10 am on Wednesday morning, when a train collided with a minibus taxi at a level crossing in the Blackheath area. read more>>


RSR on dispute betwwen PRASA & TRANSNET

18 July 2010
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is aware of the current dispute between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and Transnet, which is affecting long distance (Main Line) passenger services across the country. In terms of the existing agreements (3 year contract), Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE) is responsible for the maintenance, repair and trip inspections of PRASA’s Main Line passenger train locomotives. read more>>


RSR investigates Phalaborwa accident

Following an incident where a Transnet Freight Rail (TFR)
freight train collided with a school bus on in the morning of 31July 2010, the Railway Safety Regulator has initiated an investigation into the incident.  The accident occurred near Rolle station, between Phalaborwa and Kaapmuiden. read more>>


RSR investigates fatal TFR collision in Letaba

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is investigating a fatal incident in which a Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) train collided head-on, with a motorised track maintenance trolley. It is understood that the trolley had been part of scheduled maintenance activities earlier in the day. read more>>


Railway Safety Regulator investigates iron ore train's derailment

23 July 2010
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is investigating the derailment of a Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) train, which was transporting iron ore on the expansive Sishen-Saldanha railway line. The train derailed just after 4pm on Thursday 22 July, near Vredenburg north of Saldanha in the Western Cape. It had been en route from Kumba’s Sishen mine in the Northern Cape, travelling towards the port at Saldanha. No injuries have been reported following the incident, however extensive damage to rolling stock and infrastructure occurred. read more>>


Tampering appears to be immediate cause of Shosholoza-Meyl derailment

The Railway Safety Regulator’s (RSR) investigation thus far, indicates tampering with points on the railway line may be the immediate cause behind the derailment of a Shosholoza-Meyl train. Two (2) locomotives and three (3) coaches of the Bosvelder train derailed at 05.45am on Monday 28 June, outside Polokwane. read more>>

Rovos and Transnet Improvement Directive

23 April 2010

Following  an  investigation  into  the  root  causes  of  the  accident  on  21  April  2010  where  a  Rovos  Rail  train  derailed  outside  the  Pretoria  Station,  the Railway  Safety  Regulator  has,  in  terms  of  the  National  Railway  Safety  Regulator  Act,  2002  (Act  16  of  2002) issued an improvement directive to both Rovos Rail and Transnet Freight Rail.

RSR Statement on Rovos Rail

The Railway Safety Regulator has learnt with alarm of the Rovos Rail accident
early this afternoon in Pretoria where 3 people were fatally injured, while 9 were
critically injured.  This accident has affected all commuter rail services on the
Pretoria main line and the affected portion of the line has been closed until
further notice.

Railway Safety Regulator & Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association sign MOU on Transportation of Dangerous Goods

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) CEO Mosenngwa Mofi and the Executive Director of the Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association (CAIA) Dr Laurraine Lotter have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in order to enhance safety within the railway environment with particular emphasis on dangerous goods.

Railway Safety Regulator is investigating derailment of goods train in KwaZulu-Natal

3 November 2009

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) received reports this morning of regarding the derailment of a goods train in KwaZulu-Natal.  The RSR immediately responded to the incident by despatching inspectors to the scene of the accident to conduct an investigation. A fully loaded grain train from the Free State derailed, as it was approaching the Pietermaritzburg station, causing extensive damage to the infrastructure. Eighteen wagons of the train, and its locomotives were derailed, and the train crew sustained minor injuries.
