The Railway Safety Inspectorate of the Railway Safety
Regulator today conducted an inspection on Transnet Freight Rail (formerly
Spoornet) trains. This is part of ongoing efforts to improve safety
performance in South Africa’s railways and ensure compliance with safety
standards.
This Inspection also takes place as part of the October
Transport Month activities which aim to showcase improvements in our
transport system in general.
The RSR Inspectorate conducted a pre-departure inspection on a train at
Sentrarand.
The inspection focused on both the track worthiness and the service
worthiness of the locomotives and the wagons with a particular emphasis on
the safety critical components of the complete train.
Minor deficiencies were detected during the inspection and the RSR
Inspectorate will release a formal inspection report to the operator within
10 days.
This Inspection is part of our structured efforts to
ensure that railway operators urgently improve all aspects of safety in
their operations, and is also part of a package of initiatives aimed at
ensuring that the state of safety in our railways dramatically improves from
what was reported in our 2005/06 State of Railway Safety Report.
Our Inspectors will continue with inspections covering
both Transnet Freight Rail and the South African Rail Commuter
Corporation-Metrorail to ensure strict adherence to safety standards and
ensure tangible and sustainable improvement of safety performance in our
railways.
