Safety Learning Series: Ensuring Safe Train Operations Through Effective Brake Testing

Brake efficiency testing: A critical step in safe train operations

The safe operation of trains begins long before a journey starts. One of the most important pre-departure activities undertaken by train crews is the brake efficiency test, which confirms that the train’s braking system is functioning correctly and can stop the train safely when required.

Train operators are required to conduct brake efficiency tests before train departures and shunting movements in accordance with applicable operating procedures and safety requirements. These tests help identify potential defects and ensure that all components of the braking system are operating as intended.

Why brake efficiency testing matters

Brake performance is a critical safety element in rail operations. A properly functioning braking system enables train crews to control train movement, maintain safe operating conditions and respond effectively to emergencies.

By conducting brake efficiency tests before movement, operators can reduce the risk of brake-related incidents and ensure that trains are safe to enter the rail network.

Key elements of a brake efficiency test

  1. Brake continuity

This test confirms that the brake pipe is correctly connected throughout the entire train, from the locomotive to the last coach or wagon or to the End-of-Train Device where fitted.

  1. Brake pressure

Train crews verify that both reservoir and brake pipe pressure levels are achieved and maintained within the required operating limits.

  1. Brake application

The brakes are applied to ensure that the system responds correctly, with no defects and no abnormal leakage within the braking system.

  1. Brake release

Following brake application, the brakes are released to confirm that they disengage properly with no sticking brakes or incomplete release throughout the train consist.

  1. Locomotive or motor coach functionality

Additional checks are conducted to ensure that locomotive controls, gauges, emergency systems and vigilance systems are operating in accordance with applicable operating requirements.

Safety begins before movement

While passengers and communities often associate rail safety with activities during a journey, many of the most important safety measures take place before the train departs. Brake efficiency testing is one such measure, providing assurance that the train can be controlled safely throughout its journey.

By adhering to these testing procedures, train operators contribute to a safer and more reliable railway system for everyone.
